4G Mobile Backhauling - A Critical Success Factor of Service Deployment
Yaki Sfadya, AVP New Market Opportunities - ECI Telecom Ltd.

While much attention has been given to 4G wireless access networks, little focus has been directed to the reset of the network and specifically to the aggregation, transport and backhauling of such 4G networks. The dramatic increase in capacity per cell, the fundamental shift from TDM to packet technology, and the topology change put additional strains on the backhaul network. The quality-sensitive services that operators have planned to deliver over 4G technology require mobile backhaul that is: packet-based, multiple technology, scalable and future proof, as well as cost-effective. Understanding the impact of 4G on mobile backhaul transport is critical for successful 4G network and services deployment.

How Cellular Phone Technology Patent Portfolios Benefit the Industry
Sean Corey, IP Counsel - Sisvel US

To address the complexity, infringement and litigation issues surrounding IP and patent licensing, cell phone manufacturers are embracing joint patent portfolios to reduce IP risk and encourage the use of patented technologies. Put simply, these patent pools make it easier for 4G mobile phone manufacturers to obtain licenses for essential patents by creating a streamlined method for patent owners to license patents, on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms.

With the support of leading technology firms, patent pools offer an approach to IP that promotes broad-based adoption of new and innovative technologies. Attendees of this session will learn how a consortium benefits patent holders, licensees and end users, with examples of successful patent licensing portfolios.

This presentation will focus on building the first all-IP HSPA+ network as a first step towards LTE. It will discuss the process of revamping 3G networks to make them LTE-ready. Mr. Daigneault will also touch on the challenges that operators are facing, notably the fact that broadband traffic is increasing faster than revenue. He will consider the potential of HSPA and LTE products and technologies to lower the cost of a network as traffic grows, and will report on the results of the LTE commercial trial in Hong Kong: how ready is the technology?

The Importance of Dual FDD/TDD Compatibility
Raj Singh, CEO and President - Wavesat, Inc.

There are enormous opportunities to provide LTE UE devices in markets where operators provide services primarily in either FDD or TDD-based wireless spectrum. There are additional opportunities in markets where operators have both types of spectrum available, and intend to take full advantage of these assets. This will require an LTE UE that can roam between the FDD network and the TDD network. OEMs and ODMs are highly motivated to fully leverage their investment in a baseband chipset supplier's technology to capture as much of this UE business as possible, at the lowest cost possible. Because Wavesat provides a single LTE baseband chipset supporting both FDD and TDD, OEMs/ODMs will realize their goal by developing and testing fewer UE device designs, managing less inventory, and requiring less support overhead.
